Nutrition

Atkins Diet, Cabbage Soup Diet, Slim Fast Diet, South Beach Diet, Detox Diet. There are many different diets out there but some of them completely cut out whole food groups which can lead to a shortage of essential nutrients that you need to allow your body to function correctly. What you eat determines your energy levels, controls how you feel and look and also repairs your body. To perform all these functions you will need to eat all 3 main nutrients groups ie carbohydrate, protein and fat. Putting it simply, diets don't work. Dieters can lose significant amounts of weight in the first few months, but 5 years down the line and most of them will weigh as much, if not more, than before they started.

The reason people gain weight is that they consume more calories than they burn. It sounds simple, that's because it is. Modern day living has a great many labour saving devices, which at first glance sounds great but it is causing us to expend less calories than before. This is one of the reasons why the general population is becoming more overweight. So if you create a calorie deficit, the weight will come off and it will stay off. A healthy balanced diet combined with a regular exercise regime will help you lose weight and stay healthy.

Another important dietary requirement is water. Many people just don't drink enough of it which can lead to a whole host of medical problems. Staying properly hydrated can reduce the risk of heart attacks, keep joints lubricated, keep our immune system healthy and help clear waste products from the body. The body isn't designed to store water so it needs to be drunk regularly and in increased amounts during warm weather or when participating in sport.

Try to make sensible meal choices and consume appropriate portions based on your body size and current levels of activity. If you need help with your nutrition, please contact me using the contact page to book an appointment or call me on 07720 448 350.

Remember - in the long term, dieting does not work, sensible eating does.
